No. 3 BYU-Hawaii Edges No. 9 UWF Women’s Tennis

first_img PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 9 West Florida women’s tennis team (8-7, 3-1 GSC) faced their toughest competition this season and fell to No. 3 Brigham Young University-Hawaii (19-0) this Monday afternoon at home. The Argonauts fell 6-3 to the Seasiders and dropped their sixth match this season, while the Seasiders remain undefeated in 2010. The Argonauts could not avoid the sweep in doubles, and earned their points by splitting singles action.In doubles the Argos could not avoid losing all three matches to the Seasiders. Junior Barbara Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Seminole CC) and freshman Mariana Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ateneu HS) fell 8-3 to Salina Aranda and Jenny Chin at No. 3. At No. 1 doubles junior Taylor Brewster (Fergus, Ontario/Centre Wellington District HS) and sophomore Caitlyn Baines (Ft Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) dropped a close 8-6 match to the top ranked doubles pair in the nation formed by Seasiders Yuan Jia and Elwen Li. At No. 2 doubles senior Paulina Ojeda (Santiago, Chile/Benedictine) and freshman Luiza Sonnervig (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ateneu HS) dropped an 8-4 match to Ayako Ikeda and Shawni Porter to give the Seasiders the 3-0 lead entering singles play.In singles the Argos showed a different attitude and were able to split the action by winning three out of six matches. No. 33 Ojeda fell 6-1, 6-1 to No. 3 Elwen Li at No. 2 singles. The Seasiders earned the team win when No. 20 Jenny Chin from BYU-Hawaii defeated Mariana Sonnervig 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. No. 2 ranked Yuan Jia was too strong for No. 16 Barbara Oliveira, defeating the No. 1 Argonaut player 6-1, 6-1. The Argonauts responded by winning the remaining three matches on court, two of them in a third set super tiebreaker. At No. 3 singles Taylor Brewster defeated Ayako Ikeda 6-1, 4-6, 10-7, while Caitlyn Baines defeated Shawni Porter from BYU-Hawaii 6-0, 5-7, 10-4 at No. 4 singles. Luiza Sonnervig gave the Argos their third point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Salina Aranda. With the loss to BYU-Hawaii, West Florida women’s tennis drops to an 8-7 overall record. The Argonauts will next head to the Blue Gray Invitational hosted by Alabama University-Montogmery which will be played at the Lagoon Park in Montgomery from April 1-3.
