Haiti quake relief effort must be part of wider focus on eliminating

19 January 2010Last week’s catastrophic earthquake in Haiti not only provides a symbol of extraordinary faith, enduring hope and international solidarity amid the worst devastation, it must also serve as a reminder of the global community’s wider responsibilities to help the poor worldwide, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in an article published today. Last week’s catastrophic earthquake in Haiti not only provides a symbol of extraordinary faith, enduring hope and international solidarity amid the worst devastation, it must also serve as a reminder of the global community’s wider responsibilities to help the poor worldwide, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in an article published today.“As we rush to Haiti’s aid, let us keep in mind this larger picture,” he wrote in an opinion piece published in Washington Post, summarizing his weekend visit to the devastated country. “Those people on the streets of Port-au-Prince asked for jobs, dignity and a better future. That is the hope of all the world’s poor. Doing the right thing for Haiti in its hour of need will be a powerful message of hope for them as well.”He underscored the importance of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted at the UN summit in 2000, which seek to slash a host of social ills ranging from extreme poverty and hunger to maternal and infant mortality to lack of access to education and health care, all by 2015.“A decade ago, the international community began a new century by agreeing to act to eliminate extreme poverty by 2015. Great strides have been made toward some of these ambitious ‘Millennium Goals,’ variously targeting core sources of global poverty and obstacles to development – from maternal health and education to managing infectious disease,” he said.“Yet progress in other critical areas lags badly. We are very far from delivering on our promises of a better future for the world’s poor.”Referring specifically to the huge needs in Haiti in the aftermath of the quake, Mr. Ban stressed the importance of looking beyond immediate relief to longer-term development to put the most impoverished country in the Western hemisphere on the path to a more prosperous future. “The urgency of the moment naturally dominates our planning,” he said. “But as (Haitian) President René Préval emphasized during my meeting with him, we must be thinking about tomorrow. Haiti, though desperately poor, had been making progress. It was enjoying a new stability; investors had returned.“That will not be enough to rebuild the country as it was, nor is there any place for cosmetic improvements. We must help Haiti build back better, working with the Government so that today’s investments have lasting benefit, creating jobs and freeing Haitians from dependence on the world’s generosity.”He paid tribute, too, to the fortitude of the Haitian people. “As I moved around the stricken city, I saw horrific images like those we have all seen on television: collapsed buildings; bodies in the streets; people in dire need of food, water and shelter,” he said. “But I also saw people demonstrating extraordinary resilience despite having suffered the heaviest blows.”Turning to the UN’s immediate tasks in the devastation, he noted that the UN the World Food Programme (WFP) is working with the United States army to distribute daily food rations to nearly 200,000 people, and expects to reach as many as 1 million in the coming weeks, building toward 2 million. He underscored the UN’s lead role in effectively coordinating and channelling all the incoming international aid, grouping needs into well-defined ‘clusters,’ so that organizations complement rather than duplicate one another. A health cluster run by the UN World Health Organization (WHO), for example, is organizing medical assistance among 21 international agencies. read more

NextGen program graduates 24 future municipal leaders

Twenty-four local municipal employees recently graduated from the Goodman School of Business’s NextGen Municipal Leadership Program. The employees were from nine Niagara municipalities, including St. Catharines, Fort Erie, Pelham and Lincoln. They learned about many topics, including managing in a union environment, leading in a political situation, and employee engagement and team-building strategies for the 21st century.“This is a good example of how the Goodman School of Business is committed to offering programs and seminars geared towards the Niagara Region,” said Don Cyr, Goodman Dean.NextGen is a staff development and training program for municipal employees in a supervisory role or who aspire to fill a management role in Niagara. It was developed by the Goodman School’s Centre for Innovation, Management and Enterprise Education (CIMEE) in conjunction with Niagara’s 12 municipalities, and came to be as a result of concerns that local chief administrative officers (CAOs) and human resources specialists had about the impact of retirements and mobility issues on municipal staff. The program is a series of seminars led by leadership and human resources experts.Thorold CAO Frank Fabiano sat on the program’s founding advisory committee. He credited the vision of Niagara’s CAOs for making NextGen happen.“This will mushroom into something huge in Niagara: getting people to understand each other,” he said about the program’s potential.NextGen will run again in spring 2014. read more

Columbus Crew Gaven use luck to win and improve playoff chances

A six-game winless and a three-game losing streak had left the Columbus Crew’s playoff hopes fading, and the team was in need of some luck. “Lady Luck” made an appearance for the final regular season home game Sunday at Crew Stadium, as Columbus rallied to defeat D.C. United, 2-1. The Crew mproved its record to 12-12-8, and, with 44 points, is now in second place and in position to qualify for one of the conference’s three automatic berths for the MLS Cup playoffs. Coach Robert Warzycha said snapping the winless streak gave this win a little bit more meaning than most. “We were waiting a long time for wins,” he said. “So, the taste is sweeter.” A diving header from Columbus midfielder Eddie Gaven in the 60th minute proved to be the game-winning goal. Crew defender Sebastian Miranda split two defenders near midfield and streaked up the sideline before sending in the cross that met Gaven’s head and eventually the back of the net. “I don’t even know why I even tried to head that ball,” said a chuckling Gaven after the game. “I probably should have just hit it with my foot. But (Miranda) made a great run down the right flank and played me a perfect ball. I just kind of threw my neck at it and luckily it went in.” Columbus created several scoring opportunities early, outshooting D.C. United 11-3 in the first half. But it was the visitors who struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when D.C. United defender Daniel Woolard finished off a free-kick from midfielder Dwayne De Rosario. A shot from Columbus forward Andres Mendoza deflected off Woolard’s left leg and into the back of the net for an own goal, leveling the game, 1-1, in the 48th minute. “We haven’t had too much luck the past two games or so,” Gaven said. “But if you go out there and you work hard, luck is going to come your way a little bit. That’s kind of how it went for us tonight.” When asked if Gaven’s header was the goal of the year so far for the team, Warzycha said no and that there are more memorable goals coming for his team. “Oh I hope not,” he said. “I hope there’s more to come so then we can choose from those.” The Crew finish the regular season with road games on Oct. 15 and 22 against the New England Revolution and the Chicago Fire, respectively. read more

Gingers could go extinct due to warming temperatures

The gene mutation results in red hair and pale skin which is more sensitive to light, so DNA in cells are more susceptible to damage and cancer. As a result, if temperatures rise, it might abolish the mutation with a new evolutionary response.Speaking to The Independent, managing director of Galashiels-based ScotlandsDNA, Dr Alistair Moffat said:We think red hair in Scotland, Ireland and in the North of England is adaption to the climate. If the climate is changing and it is to become more cloudy or less cloudy then this will affect the gene. If it was to get less cloudy and there was more sun, then yes, there would be fewer people carrying the gene. However, another scientist told the paper that this would take “many hundreds of years to happen”, so you can hold on to your red hair for the moment.Only about 1-2% of the world’s population have ginger hair, but in Ireland 10% are ginger, with around 46% carrying the gene. That’s a lot of ginger. Modi govts move to unearth black money a joke Mohandas Pai

first_imgCalling the Narendra Modi government’s drive to unearth black money held by the country’s citizens a “joke”, former director of Infosys T V Mohandas Pai said on Wednesday the government does not have enough policy, as well as legal and intelligence strength, to deal with the issue.”The whole black money strategy has been a joke. The law (to unearth black money) is badly drafted and it is unworkable. Nobody will pay 60% tax to stay in this country. And secondly, your black money action should be based on better policy and better intelligence,” Pai, currently chairman of Manipal Global Education Services, told PTI in an interview.Pai, also former chief financial officer of Infosys, said the black money issue is a “big failure” of the Modi government. He also said intelligence and prosecution need to be improved to tackle the issue.”It (the government) does not have super intelligence yet. It does not have superior prosecution capabilities, and unless they get better intelligence, they are able to prosecute better, they set up fast-track courts, things are not going to work,” he said.As part of its crackdown on black money, the Modi government has since last year been requesting Swiss officials to reveal names of Indians having accounts in Swiss banks. The NDA government had promised during its election campaign last May to bring back black money stashed outside the country. In May this year, the Swiss officials publicly named seven Indians in Switzerland’s Federal Gazette as holding Swiss bank accounts, including noted businessman Yash Birla, son-in-law of late realty and liquor baron Ponty Chadha.”Black money is not waiting in foreign banks for you to go and get information. There are sophisticated structures; government should find out what these structures are, who is doing it and how it’s being done,” said Pai.The government should possess “special prosecution powers” to tackle black money holders, he said. “There is a lot of corruption in the ports. They must set up special investigation teams, appoint special prosecutors, build up capacity, add special courts, try them (offenders) and put them in jail within six months, not five years or 10 years. If you don’t do that, nothing will work,” he added.Pai alleged that tax terrorism hasn’t ended in the county even as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has repeatedly said the government is “stopping” it.last_img read more
